History

Few Cost Accountants / students residing at Howrah took initiative in the year 1967 to set-up a Chapter at Howrah. The Chapter was formed on 28th August, 1968 at a meeting at B. K. Paul's Institution, Shibpur, Howrah in presence of Shri N. K. Bose, past president of ICMAI AND CAPA. The Howrah Chapter was officially recognised by the Institute vide their letter No. 9/82/(25)/6/97 dated 19th-June, 1969 with effect from 4th June. 1969.

The Chapter was formed under the chairmanship of Shi Mohini Mohan Mukherjee, a highly respectable person, qualified Cost Accountant from U.K. He assumed very high official post of the Govt. of India. He had a close friendship with Shri. M SHOAIB. Shri M. Shoaib became the Finance Minister of Govt. of Pakistan. During the silver Jubilee celebration of ICMAI in March, 1970, he was invited as a Chief Guest, and he recognised Shri Mohini Mohan Mukherjee after a gap of long period and called him instantly "Mr. Mukherjee". Shri Mohini Mohan Mukherjee was a man of such a stature.

Since inception, The ICMAI Howrah Chapter had been performing various activities for the benefits of Students, Members and Industries at Howrah district and Public at large.

Activities for the benefits of Students:

  • Started oral coaching classes for the students (Intermediate course) from the year 1979. Then the oral coaching classes were being held at Howrah Jogesh Chandra Girls’ School, 20, G.T. Road (S), Howrah – 1 between 6 pm to 9 pm. The Howrah Chapter owned building premises at 1 / 2, Baje Shibpur Road, Shibpur, Howrah – 711102 in 1992. Then the oral coaching classes were shifted to the chapter own premises. In due course, the oral coaching classes for final students also started. At present, the Foundation course classes are being held at Howrah Akshya Sikhshyatan near Howrah Maidan. The coaching classes for Intermediate and Final classes are being held on offline mode.
  • Library Facility for students:
    • Initially, a library had been set-up at the premises of the District Library of Howrah, Howrah Maidan to assist the students providing with reference books. The library was shifted to the chapter's own premises subsequently.
    • Maintaining Register of students, recording their profiles and assisting placement of students as far as possible.
    • Recently, providing soft skill training for 120 hours in respect of office work and computer as per requirement of present syllabus of the Institute.
    • Providing Industrial orientation Training Program for 10 days for inter passed students.. This is also to meet the requirement of the present Institute's Syllabus.
    • There is also a students committee of the Howrah Chapter for interaction of students and members of MC of Howrah Chapter and for betterment of the students.
    • The Chapter provides “Help Desk” for students within the Air Conditioned office of the chapter located in the own premises. The function of helpdesk is to answer any query about Syllabus and procedure of admission etc. The office of the chapter takes admission of the students and forwards necessary document to the Institute after their registration. The office receives the instalment payment of admission fees on behalf of the Institute.

Activities for the members:

  • requently, the chapter conducts Continuous Professional Education (CPE) on important and current topics for members to keep them updated in the area of cost, finance and Tax.
  • rovide necessary help, if require, for "Benevolent fund” for the members of the Institute.
  • he Chapter had been conducting seminars on different subjects for members and for persons from industry and commerce.

  • The Chapter sends information to our members, as and when, the news of any employment opportunity surfaced to the knowledge of Howrah Chapter.

For the benefits of Howrah District and Public at large:

  • The chapter has a close contacts with the Howrah chamber of commerce and Industry. The Chapter invites their members for participation in the seminar organised by the Howrah Chapter.
  • The chapter arranges Factory visit for Students as well as Members. During factory visit, our members advise the organisation for improvement of productivity after necessary SOWT analysis, the names of the organisations so far visited by our students and members are as below:

The vision of the Institute of cost Accountants of India (ICMAI), a statutory body under an Act of Parliament is as below:

"The Institute of cost Accountants of India would be the preferred source of resources and professionals for the financial leadership of enterprises globally". Being the part of ICMAI, the Howrah Chapter is also trying its best to achieve this vision.
